Department of Botany

Principal: Fr.Dr. Victor Lobo, SJ

Head of Deparmtent: Dr. Jayarama Reddy

PG Coordinator: Dr. Jacob Paul

Department of Botany was established in 1954. It was once headed by the towering botanist, the lateRev. Fr. Dr. Cecil J. Saldanha, whose achievements have inspired hundreds of students and continues to be a guiding light to the Department and the College to this day. Dr.Jayarama Reddy, Associate professor, currently heads the department and the PG coordinator is Dr.Rajamani S. Presently, the programs offered by the department include five undergraduate courses with a maximum intake of 70 students each. The post-graduate programme intake was 20 until 2014, after which it was increased to 30.

Undergraduate programmes:
Postgraduate programme:
Certificate courses:

In the final year of the Master's programme, four elective papers are offered by the department (two elective papers per semester) and students specialize in any two of their choice. It is mandatory for all the post-graduate students to work on a short-term project in the 2nd year (3rd and 4th semesters) in the electives offered by the department which involves various areas of research like Advanced Plant Physiology, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Systematics and Microbiology. The department has a total of 15 teaching faculty, of which 03 are aided staff, all of whom are Associate Professors with doctoral degrees and have over 30 years of teaching experience each. There are 12 unaided faculty all of whom are PhD/NET/KSET qualified. The department is supported by 4 attenders. The department promotes a culture of academics and research amongst its students. Keeping this in mind, students are encouraged to take up various research topics of their interest and present their work in National and International conferences and publish papers as well.

The Research Centre is also actively involved in guiding students for their Doctoral degrees. Dr.Jayarama Reddy and Dr.Rajamani are recognized guides for Ph.D. in Bangalore, Bharathiar and Bharathidasan Universities and have successfully guided Ph.D. candidates. Our staff who have now retired too, have been involved in guiding students for their M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees during their illustrious career. They have also been engaged in many research projects and have enhanced the research culture of the department. Department has conducted several State and National level seminars, workshops, and conferences and constantly strives to create such knowledge sharing platforms throughout the year. An International Conference on "Green Technologies for Sustainable Ecosystems and Trade Show" was organised by Botany department on 26th-27th, February 2016 in association with Hong Kong University, Durham University, UK, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Govt. of India. Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of Karnataka and UGC. More than 550 delegates from 14 different countries participated in the event.

The department publishes an International Open Access Journal named "Biovistas - International Journal of Biological Research (IJBR)", ISSN -2321-0524 to encourage teachers and students to publish research papers. It can be accessed at www.biovistas.org. Dr.Jayarama Reddy is the Editor in Chief of this journal. Botanical society (Dr. Vaishnavi. M& Mrs. Grace Leena Crasta-Coordinators) and Centre for Molecular and Computational Biology (Dr.Jayarama Reddy&Dr. Lokesh Ravi-Coordinators) are the two dynamic associations of the department.

The laboratories are equipped with major instruments for research – PCR machine, GEL doc, stereo zoom microscope, binocular phase contrast microscope with photomicrographic attachment UV-VIS spectrophotometer etc along with a well-established plant tissue culture lab and taxonomy lab. B. Sc and M. Sc students are taken on local and out station Botanical tours respectively to gain knowledge in Plant Systematics. Industrial visits and visits to institutes like TDU, NIMHANS etc are also regularly organized to bridge the gap between industry and academia. Web based interactive smart classes for theory and practicals are conducted along the traditional chalk and talk method. Stereo zoom microscopes with Luminous focusing system interfaced with LCD projectors and binocular microscopes with built-in cameras are available to enable students for in depth observations and photography. Plant taxonomy practical sessions are conducted through an online connect to the JCB Herbarium (http://flora-peninsula-indica.ces.iisc.ac.in/welcome.php) of Indian Institute of Science which is a digital herbarium based on the monumental work of Dr. Cecil J. Saldanha’s "Karnataka flora" (volume 1 and 2). The Department maintains a greenhouse for research purposes. At the UG and PG level, students are trained with techniques of preparation of herbaria and also about the preservation techniques too. Currently, funds from Research Projects (from various funding agencies), College of Excellence (CE) Grants have been used to procure a few instruments and to renovate some labs. The department is also funded by DBT for Star College Status. From 2017, the department has also been receiving grants from FIST. The department has its own website at (www.biovistas.org) and a Facebook account (Facebook/Botany Sjc).

EDITORIAL:

We are happy and proud to have celebrated the silver jubilee of St. Joseph’s Post Graduate and Research Centre. It is also a matter of pride to us that we can look back at the years that have gone by. It has been our inspiring past that has guided us in our endaevour to serve the society and the world at large, the overtly stated vision and mission of the Jesuits. True to this vision, St. Joseph’s College has completed more than 130 years. In this glorious past, Botany department has carved a niche of its own and it has completed 60 years at the under graduate level. It has also completed 25 years as a post graduate department. Many eminent personalities of our country from all walks of life have passed through the portals of this great institution. St. Joseph’s Botanical Society was established in 1986 by the staff and students at St. Joseph’s Post Graduate and Research Centre. Initially the society was bringing out an annual magazine called “Vriksha”, which used to mostly carry the article by the students. In order to give the scientific and technical facet to the publication the society started this Journal in 2005. Since then we have so far published five volumes. In fact two of the volumes carried the proceedings of the National Conferences conducted by the Department of Botany in the years 2006 and 2008. It has not been allthat easyto bring out this publication. There were problems related to finances and also to the contribution of papers by the scientists. Nevertheless our efforts continued to keep this journal alive. I am extremely thankful to the Dr. Daniel Fernandes S.J, Principal, St. Joseph’s College. It is because ofhis unconditional support and encouragement this journalis published now after a gap of one year. I am also thankful to Dr. Charles Suresh and Dr. S. Sundar Rajan, the former heads of the department of Botany. My colleagues at the department have always been supportive and helpful in bringing out this journal.
